Melissa is the founder of Westchester Teacher, a learning resource serving Westchester and Connecticut. As a reading intervention specialist, Melissa is trained in the highly effective Orton-Gillingham method. She holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Fordham University and has a successful track record of 16 years teaching and tutoring children grades K-6. She prides herself on being an expert in helping struggling readers become proficient readers.

Process
- Once we receive your enrollment form, we will contact you within 24 hours to schedule a consultation. During the consultation, we learn about your child, discuss pricing, and schedule the initial evaluation.

The initial assessment is an hour. During this hour, we assess all areas of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, sight word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Your child’s reading level will also be determined at this time. After the assessment is completed, we will discuss your child’s results and create a plan suited to your needs and budget.

Each session consists of a lesson that is carefully created based on the data received from the assessment. Sessions include some or all of the following components: review of previous concepts taught, introduction of new material (skill and sight words), phonemic awareness, blending drill, sentence composition, fluency, and reading comprehension activities.
- Throughout the sessions, your child’s progress is monitored and recorded. Monthly progress reports are created and shared with you and your child’s classroom teacher.

Westchester teacher is a privately owned company with highly skilled and certified educators who only specialize in reading. Every session is customized and thoroughly planned based on your child’s needs. We also believe in maintaining a strong connection to your child’s school. We periodically share reports with you and your child’s classroom teacher/s.
Orton- Gillingham is a highly effective, explicit, multisensory, structured approach to teaching children how to read, write, and spell. Orton- Gillingham approach is often used with the PAF program. For more information about PAF, visit https://www.pafprogram.com
Sessions can be 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or an hour depending your child’s needs.
Payment is received prior to the beginning of session. We accept cash, check, Venmo or Zelle.
Your session is very important to us! We understand that delays and incidents can occur in our everyday life. If you need to cancel or re-schedule your appointment, we ask you contact us 24hrs in advance. Appointments canceled within 24 hours will incur a charge of 50% of the service amount.
